Backing Storage
Backing storage devices can be grouped in three different sections primary, secondary and tertiary storage. Primary storage is located inside the computer it is small in capacity and it is mostly lost when the computer is turned off. Secondary storage is mostly located in the computer, is permanent store for data such as software. Secondary storage is mostly higher in capacity, than primary storage devices. Tertiary storage is portable storge than is made to use or transfer data on different computers. It usually various in size depending on what device you are using.
Primary Storage
RAM
Primary storage, also known as memory, is the main area in a computer in which data is stored for quick access by the computer. RAM is the main type of primary storage it is used in all computers. RAM is a primary storage device as it matches all the features needed for a primary storage device. It has temporary storage instead of permanent and memory is easily accessed.
Below is a list of some Primary Storage devices:
ROM - Rom is a primary storage device because it is an internal component and is memory instead of storage.
BIOS - BIOS is a primary storage device because it is an internal component and it has a limited amount of storage capacity and is not used for permanent storage.
Cache – Cache primary storage device because it is an internal component and it has a limited amount of storage capacity and is not used for permanent storage.

Secondary Storage
Hard Drive
Secondary storge devices are devices that are used for permanent storage. They are higher in capacity that primary storage devices. Hard Disk Drive is one of the main types of secondary storage devices. As a hard drive is used to store data such as software. The data that is stored stays on the hard drive until it is deleted. Hard Drive are usually 40GB - 1TB in storage capacity, they need to be big in capacity as they store all of the computers data.
Tertiary Storage
USB Stick
Tertiary storage devices are devices that are used for storage purposes. Tertiary storage is used for its portability, meaning that tertiary devices main advantage is that data on one computer can be accessed on a another computer. The capacity of the storage vary from what device is being used. USB memory stick is a great example of tertairy storage. USB sticks are portable and are easily to use. The data can be saved easily and accessed easily. USB Stick are very popular and are very useful.
Below is a list of some Tertiary Storage devices:
External Hard Drive – External Hard Drive is a tertiary storage device because it is portable and its data can be used on other computers or compatible devices.
Floppy Disk - Floppy Disk is a tertiary storage device because it is portable and its data can be used on other computers or compatible devices.
CD/DVD Disk - CD/DVD Disk is a tertiary storage device because it is portable and its data can be used on other computers or compatible devices.
SD Card – SD Card is a tertiary storage device because it is portable and its data can be used on other computers or compatible devices.
